University Insect Collection Moved to Maine State Museum
University of Maine recently donated more than 107,000 insects to the Maine State Museum in Augusta. The large and rare collection was being stored in an attic for about 10 years due to lack of money for proper storage and curation. Without proper curation the collection would soon become damaged and become useless for research. At the museum the collection will be kept in a climate controlled room and be used for research and exhibition.
The collection includes insects that are nearly 200 years old, some of which have never been identified. They will be added to the state museum’s collection of more than 60,000 insects used for research by the Maine Forest Service.
