Academic Appeals

Academic Appeals by Graduate Students

While conflicts between a student and their advisory committee are extremely rare, there is, nevertheless, a mechanism by which any problems a student perceives may be addressed. The following text was adopted by the School to cover this contingency.

A graduate student may seek to redress an academic ruling from their graduate advisory committee by appealing to the Graduate Coordinator. The Graduate Coordinator will then act as an intermediary and try to resolve the issue with the chair of the student’s graduate advisory committee. If satisfactory resolution is not achieved at this first step, the school Graduate Committee as a whole would consider the appeal. Barring resolution at this second step, the appeal would be forwarded to the School Director who would be the final arbiter at the school level. Further appeal, if necessary, would be handled by the Graduate School.
