Steve Devoto, Wesleyan University: Muscle and spine development: Insights from zebrafish.
Stephen Devoto has a storied career investigating the basic biology of muscle stem cells and the development of the spine. He and his labmates identified the cells that are precursors for most muscle formation in embryos and post-embryonic life, including repair following injury. While investigating genes with that are associated with embryonic spinal defects, his group has recently uncovered new connections between the early segmentation genes and skeletal pattern; these will be featured in his seminar this week.
