One Island, One Health: Biodiversity conservation and health at the human domestic animal and wildlife interface in Madagascar

In Madagascar, growing contact between domestic and wild animals has amplified the risks of impact of invasive pathogens on the island’s rich and endangered wildlife.

Yet, despite the range of endemic and endangered species that could be affected, only a handful of studies have been conducted to characterize the spread of pathogens and assess the impact of interventions for conservation. Here, I will present our ongoing efforts to disentangle the patterns of pathogen transmission within and between species and ultimately participate in wildlife conservation by promoting an integrated approach to health and disease research in Madagascar.

Dr. Fidisoa “Fidy” Rasambainarivo is a wildlife veterinarian and an assistant professor in the Department of Biology at East Carolina University. Fidy obtained a DVM from the University of Antananarivo and completed his doctorate at the University of Missouri Saint Louis in 2018. In 2019, he founded and acts as the scientific director of Mahaliana Labs, a research lab and training center in Madagascar that aims at advancing conservation science in Madagascar while “leveling the playing field for Malagasy scientists.” His research characterizes patterns of health and disease transmission at the human, domestic animal, and wildlife interface in order to inform biodiversity conservation and public health policies.
