About classroom use

Fascinating organisms can transform the teaching of basic principles in biology. The sea slugs immediately engage their audience due to their “leaves that crawl” appearance. Learning that the green coloration results from the sea slugs stealing chloroplasts from an alga, enabling the animals to photosynthesize like a plant for months, arouses the interest, curiosity and imagination of “students” ages 4 to 94.

We have been working on culture techniques so that both the alga and the young sea slugs can be easily raised in the classroom with minimal materials. These intriguing animals and the media that we will be producing to support its use in the classroom will serve as excellent, novel teaching tools. One of our goals is to take “Solar-Powered Sea Slugs” from the lab into the classroom through the use of live animals and the development of interactive, multimedia educational materials.

Seed grant support to initiate this effort has been received from the American Society for Plant Biology Educational Foundation and the Maine Technology Institute.
