Welcome to the School of Biology and Ecology at the University of Maine! SBE offers an exciting diversity of degree programs for our undergraduates, from our health professions and ecology concentrations in Biology to practical training in Clinical Laboratory Sciences and degrees in Zoology and Botany. Our faculty are dedicated to teaching and include a number of college, university and nationally recognized instructors. Students start with our Schoodic Experience, which introduces our new first year students to our programs, faculty, and each other during a fun hands-on orientation program on the coast of Maine. This is just the introduction to the array of laboratory and field experiences that our students benefit from in our classes and research programs.
Yes, in addition to our excellence in teaching, SBE faculty are also national and international leaders in research. The breadth of our faculty expertise ranges from basic studies in genomics, development, systematics and evolution, and behavior and ecology to research in climate change, conservation, pest management, and science education. Graduate and undergraduate students have the opportunity to work on a number of federally funded research projects including those associated with the Sustainable Solutions Initiative, the Climate Change Institute, and the Maine Agriculture and Forestry Experiment Station.
